Has your child been crying uncontrollably lately or facing a serious loss of appetite? There might be a slight chance that they’re suffering from a common condition in children known as an acid reflex which could be the reason behind your child’s discomfort and refusal to eat. Acid reflux, which is also known as gastroesophageal reflux, occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach are pushed upwards into the throat causing a painful burning sensation that can cause serious distress for your little one. Luckily with a few simple lifestyle changes, parents can avoid this problem in their young children, keeping their tiny bellies happy and healthy.
Smaller, Frequent Meals
The most common cause for an acid reflux in your baby is a full tummy after a large meal. This can be avoided by switching up their feeding schedule so that they are fed small and more frequent meals.
The Bottle’s Nipple Size
The right nipple size for your baby’s milk bottle can be crucial for avoiding any acid refluxes. If the hole in the bottle is too small, the baby might risk gulping in too much air while trying to drink the milk whereas a nipple size too big can make them swallow the liquid too fast.
Burps Are Good for Babies
Feeding your child a bit too late may not be a great idea since a prolonged period of inactivity with a full stomach can cause indigestion. Instead, try to lay the baby on his belly and massage his back slowly, a few hours before putting him to bed. This slight pressure on baby’s stomach can prevent acid reflex and allows any trapped gas to escape from his digestive system.
Watch Their Sleeping Position
Keeping your baby’s upper body slightly elevated with the help of a few soft pillows while sleeping ensures that that acidic contents of his stomach do not get pushed up to the throat and hence avoiding any belching.
Lastly, if the problem persists and is seriously affecting your infant’s health, it’s best to consult a pediatrician for a thorough examination and treatment with medication or surgery. Although these procedures can be a cause of several side effects so make sure to discuss all the risks with the doctor before proceeding with a major decision regarding your baby’s health.
