Dental Hygiene for Toddlers: How to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy

Teeth are very important for your young toddlers to help them chew and talk, and according to the doctors, dental hygiene is just as crucial for children as it is for adults. Children’s teeth usually begin to grow out of their gums around the age of 6 months and by the time they are two years old, they will already have a set of twenty tiny teeth in their mouth. At the early stage in your toddler’s dental development, there are several gaps between their small teeth which can make them susceptible to infections due to any food that may get stuck between them which is why parents must take extra care of their children’s dental hygiene to ensure strong, healthy gums and teeth.
Tooth decay can be very uncomfortable and painful for infants who are not able to communicate their discomfort to their parents and is one of the leading causes for a baby’s crankiness and constant crying; not to mention the costly trips to a dentist’s clinic and other health issues such as stomach ache which can be a direct consequence of bad dental hygiene. Luckily, there are several steps that parents can take to ensure proper care for their infant’s oral health from the moment their first teeth start growing out.
Using a soft cloth or a clean gauzed pad on your toddler’s teeth every day can be very helpful in preventing any future gum or teeth infection. As their baby teeth slowly begin to grow, you can transition a cloth to a soft tooth brush to slowly cleanse their mouth after feeding them, although a tooth paste is not necessary at this point. Practicing daily oral care on your child from a very early age gets them into a habit of brushing their teeth daily once they grow older and are able to do it themselves but until the age of 10, parents should try to supervise their children’s brushing routine in order to correct their technique and provide them any assistance that they may need.
Diet also plays a crucial role in your child’s oral health, which is why doctors advise parents to keep their children away from too many sugary treats and candies. Instead of giving them sodas and processed sugars as desserts, try to help them develop a healthy habit of snacking on fruits instead and cleaning their teeth afterwards to avoid tooth decay.
A regular trip to the dentist can also give you clues about your children’s oral hygiene. Dentists will usually prescribe fluoride drops or tablets for your toddler’s healthy teeth, and by the time they are two years old, they can begin their first fluoride treatment where the dentist puts a fluoride paste on the children’s teeth to give them extra protection from germs.
